It is thought that tarot was invented in the 15th century in the north of Italy. Since then, tarot cards have been widely used throughout the world for fortune telling and divination.

A tarot card deck features 78 cards, which have distinctive illustrations. These cards can be broken down into two sections, major and minor arcana. There are 22 major arcana, also known as trump cards, these are:

  • The Fool
  • The Magician
  • The High Priestess
  • The Empress
  • The Emperor
  • The Hierophant
  • The Lovers
  • The Chariot
  • Justice
  • The Hermit
  • The Wheel of Fortune
  • Strength
  • The Hanged Man
  • Death
  • Temperance
  • The Devil
  • The Tower
  • The Star
  • The Moon
  • The Sun
  • Judgement
  • The World

The 56 cards that remain are the minor arcana, also known as the pips. These cards are not dissimilar to modern playing cards, with four suits that each contain 10 cards numbered from ace to 10 and four court cards, the page, knight, queen and king.

A tarot card reading typically begins with the subject or third-party reader shuffling the deck and laying them out in a pattern. The tarot card reader then interprets this pattern or 'spread' to gain insight into the subject's future. Every card's position in the spread is given a number, and the cards are turned over in that sequence. The position the card is in has an impact on the interpretation, as it shows what aspect of the subject's life the card is referring to. Each card that is turned over is interpreted individually before moving to the next.

Some of the most popular tarot card spreads include the Celtic Cross spread, which offers an in depth reading. There is also the horseshoe, which is a very common spread. Using seven cards, this spread is ideal for newcomers or people seeking specific guidance, as, like the Celtic Cross spread, it offers an in depth reading. However, briefer readings can also be performed with spreads such as the 3-card and the 1-card spread.
